the 10 best of [f]all

yes friends, that's right... it's finally time for fall.  i know it's october, but tomorrow is the day according to the forecasters that it is finally dipping into the 70s, and only getting cooler for there.  it seems like it was just yesterday we were posting about the beauty of spring and summer.  but alas, it's time for autumn.  you know, cool weather, down comforters, IPAs, hats, school work... it's the best time of year.  my favorite season, which could explain why we just celebrated our three-year wedding anniversary during this most beautiful time in colorado :)  but that's just one of the many great things of fall - below are the rest of my favorites.

what are you favorite things about fall?

oh yeah. avs baby.
10.  start of hockey season

it's possibly the best day of the year - the day of the avalanche hope opener.  the day when the air smells just right, the beer is at the perfect temperature, the fans are riled up, the opening video is new and still looks cool, and you have just the right of optimism to think in that moment before the puck drops that this really could be your year.  it's fantastic.  we usually go to every opening night, but this year we will be in LA, missing peter the great's retirement ceremony.  but that won't make the day any less fantastic.

scarf + hat. you can't see it but i have boots on too.
9.  sweaters/boots/scarves/hats

you could say i'm a little obsessed with scarves.  a few years back i even had a bunch of thin scarves i would wear in the summer a la jennifer aniston in along came polly (side note: guess who is in that? PSH.).  seriously.  now i wait until september to break them out - but between september and may a day won't pass where i won't be adorned with a hat or a scarf.  and boots.  i could write poems about how much i love boots... but i will leave it at this little paragraph here.  a good pair of boots makes my month.  my old faithfuls are the black patent leather marc jacobs flat boots i snagged before moving to prague.  best purchase ever.

8.  fall seasonal beers

you could say i like beer.  after reading this blog though, you might think i am obsessed with beer.  but the octoberfests and fall seasonals that come out are just about one of the best parts of fall.  especially when i can enjoy it after finishing homework, sitting outside in my backyard with philip while the leaves fall around us.  perfection.

i miss steve carell :(
 7.  fall tv season

lame, i know.  but it truly is one of my favorite things about the season.  as i've mentioned before, thursday is my designated no-school-day.  and one of the reasons we picked that day is that all of our favorite shows are on thursdays.  all the good shows have been thursday shows - friends, seinfeld, the office, parks & rec, etc.  it's the best day (and the only day) that we actually just watch tv when we come home.  it's my laughter break towards the end of the week :)

FLEET FOXES!
6.  fall music change

you know it's true.  when the leaves are falling outside, it's just a little off to listen to belle & sebastian or vampire weekend.  a little too uppity, a little too summer-y.  so one thing that i love to do as the temperature starts to drop is do an ipod mini-makeover: download some new, fall-appropriate tunes.  i'll give you a little samples of what this year's playlist sounds like (but i don't know how to do music on here so it's just a list of names.  sorry.):

  • underneath the sycamore by death cab for cutie
  • helplessness blues by the fleet foxes (DEFINITELY download this one!)
  • flight attendant by josh rouse
  • roll away your stone by mumford & sons
  • new slang by the shins (a fall staple)
  • sing by travis (another fall staple, one of my all time favorites)
  • tourist by athlete
  • wolves by iron & wine
there's much more where that came from.  but fall music is a little more tame, a little less anthem-y, a little less bubble gum, a little more substance.

5.  sleeping in

now i know i'm either working or going to school every weekend this fall, but a girl can dream.  in the summer there is no sleeping in upstairs - it's too damn hot and sunny.  but in the fall, well, there's a breeze blowing through the room enough to snuggle underneath those flannel sheets from last year i'm still obsessed with.  plus there's some pretty good people to cuddle with in my bed..

4.  wine

there's something about wine in the summer that i just can't handle.  and while i love my fall seasonal brews (see #8 above) in the fall it's ok to come back home and open up a nice bottle of wine.  the weather has to be just right - and we are just about getting there.  mmmmmm.

phil at a cafe in fez, morocco, last october. sad face.
3.  trip/vacation

fall is traditionally (nothing about us is traditional) usually when we go on a trip, with the exception of paris.  so usually around columbus day, i'm ready to hop on a plane.  this year as you all know we didn't plan a big trip because of the bathroom, so we are trip-less.  actually columbus day weekend will mark ONE YEAR since we have left the country.  this makes me very irritated so don't bring it up.  but we are going to LA this weekend, so that will help.  and next year there will be a trip on the horizon... don't you worry about that.  plans are in the works (not really but i'm coming up with ideas to pitch to philip).

2.  hot cocoa, coffee, tea...

coffee in the summer isn't the same.  but a hot mug of coffee with a drizzle of milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon, or tea with some brown sugar... well, let's say it's the thing that makes everyone wish for cold outside.  warm inside.

1.  fall decor around the house

it's that time of year - putting away the fresh flowers and getting out the wheat.  it's lovely.  my mantel needed a change - so here's what it's looking like right now.  the balls in the jars are thanks to ikea!  a lot of it hasn't changed but it's a gradual process, no cinnamon sticks out yet!  here's a few other pics just since i haven't posted pics of the house in forever (excuse the poor quality, these are iphone pics, my camera is sleeping!).

love the new candleholders!

same candleholders, new color candles

and it wouldn't be fall without campaigning.  obama 2012!
