very exciting announcement!

GUYS.  big news here.

i am so thrilled to announce that my website is finally live + ready for you all!

it's been such a fun road here at an italian girl going dutch, but the reality is that, thanks to all my readers, i've outgrown this site.  it no longer has the capabilities to do what i need it to do, and for as much work as i've put into it, it just kind of looks old to me.

so after weeks of hard work and planning, a blogging HTML course + lots of research, i put together my own site.  i am so excited to share it all with you today.

there are still a few changes coming to the new website over the next couple weeks, but on the whole it is done, save for some new photos coming.

it's been a really fun ride.  i started an italian girl going dutch because PI + i had recently bought our house, and we wanted to share the renovations we were planning and our many travels with our friends and family near and far.  since then, it's grown in size and readership and my blog topics have evolved.

but from here on out, i won't be the italian girl going dutch anymore...

i'll be so alaina.

so come on over and check it out.  all your old favorite posts are there, along with many new features.

in another week or so i will change this site to automatically redirect to so alaina, so get your bookmarks + email updates situated... and enjoy!

thanks to the beautiful sarah mc cormick for the site name idea in the form of a haghtag, to the girls of blog (design) love for the fabulous e-course on HTML and branding, and to my amazing readers and supporters for helping me grow this more than i thought i ever could!

til next time... see you at the new site!

coming out of the [infertility] closet.

pic found on pinterest via look linger love
well, things around the blog are shifting.

i started this blog to share the stories of PI & i.  renovating the house, our travels, things like that.  there were always pictures and stories to share with so many people we love, many of whom are so far away.  and i don't really want to change that, but i do want to introduce a new topic into the mix: our fertility problems.

it's not something we've made public at all.  it's not even something that all of our friends, or all of our family [until recently] knew of.  we didn't tell people we were trying to get pregnant.  we didn't tell many people at all that it took us 18 months to get pregnant, and there was a very big portion of our friends and family who didn't know we lost that first baby.  and there are still yet some members of our family who aren't aware of that we lost our second baby just over a week ago.

it's not that we are secretive people.  we just didn't want to announce to people, 'hey! we're having sex without birth control!' to tell them we were trying.  we figured we'd just wait, and then surprise our family with a happy announcement.  but like many people, we just assumed it would all work out.  it hasn't so far.  i've decided i want to start sharing our experiences on the blog.  it's really personal, and not something i would normally blog about, but i have to say that while going through both of my miscarriages, reading other people's blogs and hearing about their experiences - even if they are total strangers - have been a huge source of comfort to me.  so i'm going to start sharing what we are going through.  i can't promise that everything will be on here - some things are still very personal to us.  but if my experiences can hep bring comfort to one person who has gone through something similar, well, then i'll feel pretty damn good.

so, in a nutshell, here is our fertility story.

***

it all started during christmas season of 2010.  PI was converting my parents' old home videos of my brother and i onto dvd for my parents and family members.  it was such an awesome time... we spent so many evenings going through those old home movies, looking at my brother and i as babies, of our cousins and family members.  well, the young versions of my brother and i had quite the influence on us, and by the time the home video was on dvd we had decided we would start trying for a baby of our own.  we considered it a good omen that my next cycle would begin on new year's day of 2011, and we happily embarked on our adventure.

we didn't want to use ovulation kits, basal body thermometers or anything else.  we thought we'd just pull the goalie and see if we could score.  a year passed, and it was a busy year - i decided to go back to school, started volunteering for the obama campaign, and did tons of house improvements.  so it wasn't too big of a deal that by the end of the year, there was no baby.  my doctor said we shouldn't worry yet, and said that if there was no baby by june she would recommend some testing, just to be sure.  that would mark eighteen months of 'trying.'

so it was with absolute joy that, by the end of my maycation last year, i was pregnant.  we went to my doctor's office, got confirmation of the pregnancy through bloodwork, then went home to wait until it was time for ultrasounds and other fun things.  but, as quickly as the news came, it was gone.  in no time it all i had started spotting and cramping, and just a few days after we had the good news i knew in my heart i was having a miscarriage.  it was over in just a few days, and luckily everything passed naturally and i didn't need any medication or a d&c.  but we did, however, learn that i am rh negative, and quickly learned about rhogam and how necessary it is for rh negative mothers-to-be, and i got my first rhogam treatment at the hospital.

it was a really difficult time for us [and when i wrote this depressing blog post].  we were told over and over how common miscarriage is, that it was a positive sign that i could at least get pregnant, and that most mothers who miscarry go on to have healthy, full-term babies for their next pregnancy.  so we got back to trying as soon as we could, and we felt positive.  i would have been due at the end of february, which meant i would have been seven months pregnant while finishing school - which would have been rough for me [and, let's be honest, probably just as rough for PI].  the timing just wasn't right for us.  we felt that even moreso when we made the decision to move to boston, knowing that it would have been so hard to go through all of that with a very pregnant alaina and to have a baby out here without any doctors i knew.

but we also knew that the timing was perfect for us now that we were out from boston.  with me freelancing from home, PI working from home between travels and no more school, it was the perfect time for us to get pregnant.  PI's philosophy was always that there was nothing wrong, but that we were under too much stress at home and once that stress dissipated we would conceive in no time.

and he was kind of right.  within a month of moving into our new place, i was pregnant again.  i knew it as soon as we got back from our la trip in february, but we didn't find out for sure until we were alone for our weekend getaway in montreal a week later.  the joy we both felt was absolutely amazing - even when PI had to stop five or six times so i could go to the bathroom on the drive home from montreal :]

as soon as we got back to boston, we started calling doctors [i hadn't yet found a new once since the move] to get in asap.  we explained that we were very eager to get in to confirm the pregnancy and hopefully have an ultrasound, and we found an office that would take us in quickly.  our ultrasound was fine, blood work was fine, and we were sent home with happy hearts to wait.  we were told that i wasn't as far along as i had thought, but everything still looked normal.  there was no detectable heartbeat yet, which was to be expected, and we were told to come back in two weeks.  my hcg levels were doubling and i had no troublesome symptoms, unlike my last pregnancy.  we told my mom [who had to move up her wedding, since her november date was two days away from my due date!], my dad figured it out, and we were counting the days until we could tell my family in new york and PI's family in vegas in just a few weeks.

two weeks later, we returned for our ultrasound feeling nervous but very positive.  my breasts hurt, my food habits had made a complete 180, i had morning sickness [at night for some reason], all the good, normal symptoms.  so we were pretty caught off guard when our little baby still had no heartbeat.  the doctor told us to come back again in five days, saying that it could be just 'one day too soon' to hear a heartbeat, but that it didn't look good.  we were told it was most likely not a viable pregnancy, but wouldn't be given that diagnosis until a follow-up ultrasound and blood work was taken.

we went home and mourned.  although we didn't have our diagnosis yet, we knew what was coming.  no bleeding or cramping or anything scary happened in the five days we waited, but all the same i knew in my heart once more that this was not our baby.  and sure enough, five days later we were told just that.  the only choice left was to decide if we wanted to wait for the miscarriage to happen naturally [which it inevitably would, though who knows in how long], take medication to induce the miscarriage, or have a d&c.  it was an agonizing decision and the experience was without a doubt the worst in my life, but once more, just as the news of the baby came, it was gone.

***

so.  that's where we are today.  we've had lots of blood taken for chromosomal analysis to see if we can learn why two otherwise perfectly healthy and young hopeful parents have had two heartbreaking losses.  i don't know what the next step is, but we will continue to heal while we figure out what is next.  and i will update you all from time to time, and i hope that, in doing this, i can bring some measure of comfort and help to people who may have gone through or are going through the same thing.  because i now know that you are not alone, and what you are feeling is perfectly valid.  fertility challenges make for a rough road, but though there are many different roads to parenthood, they all lead to the same place eventually.

til next time...

home is where you make it.

PI + i have a problem.  whenever we go somewhere - anywhere, really - i'll tug on his hand, or he'll wrap his arm around my shoulders and hold me close, and one of us will say, 'we should live here.'

it's true.  when we lived in denver, we would fantasize about living in boston.  when we lived in boston [the first time] we fantasized about living in brooklyn.  and once we were in brooklyn, we reminisced about living in denver and decided to move back.  and now that we are back in boston again?  well, we have been tempted by the sunshine, ocean breeze, perpetual spring weather [and of course our nephew ryder's kisses don't hurt either] of california.

no, we aren't moving.  but we are learning to love our wanderlust instincts, moving around from place to place, not totally being tied down to any one city.  it's freeing, really.  as hard as it was for me to leave our beautiful home in denver, the longer we are away from it, the easier it becomes.  yes, it was our home.  but now, my home is a lovely 150+ year old loft in the south end of america's oldest city.  it doesn't feel so foreign anymore, like we are living in a hotel room or someone else's house with our stuff in it.  we are becoming more versatile, and i am starting to feel just as home in our loft as i did in our house.

there is something liberating knowing that we can move at the end of the year if we want to.  that doesn't mean we will, or that we even will want to - maybe we will fall so deeply in love with boston that we won't ever want to go anywhere else.  but may we will be ready for a new adventure, and we are so lucky that PI's new job will let that happen for us.

something interesting about PI + i is that we have family everywhere.  so we always miss people, no matter where we live, we won't be near all our family.  which means we have to kind of pick and choose, decide who we can live near and how it will allow us to travel to the other members of our family.  but with all the changes we have gone through, i am loving the idea of MORE.  i hate the packing and moving part of moving, but love the exploring new cities, making new friends, and enjoying my new home with my husband every time.

who knows where our home will be together a year from today.  it might be somewhere new, and i can't wait to find out.

on that note, we are headed back to boston today on the red eye... excited to sleep in my own bed and be bombarded with snow once more [ok, not so excited about that second one, but it's happening whether i am excited about it or not].

til next time...!

06 February 2013

alright then.

welp.  this is happening.

i'm going to finish my book.

i like the idea.  saying that i'm completing my first novel sounds so much better than 'stay at home wife.'

stay tuned...

28 December 2012

the hunt is on.

so, here we go, apartment hunting.  while i loved house hunting soooo much, our house was the third house we saw on the first day of hunting.  so that was pretty fast.

but here we are in boston, and since we just got here, all the apartment hunting i have been doing until now has been online.  it's not very helpful.  so since the day we got here (2 days ago) we have been on the hunt.  we saw once place on the 26th, one place this morning... and then we stopped at a building in the south end that i have been emailing for two months.  and you know what?

IT'S OUR NEW BUILDING!

we just put the application in today... so i don't want to say much else until we get the approval.  but it's gorgeous, and i can't wait to share pictures.  so now, it's just about waiting!

hopefully i'll have news to share soon, but in the meantime... stay warm :)

xoxo

merry christmas to all!

10 December 2012

day of firsts and lasts.

 upside down

well, it is finally over.  i finished my LAST CLASS EVER today.  it felt really good, and it was a really great class too actually.  we had a mock-constitutional convention, which i felt was a great way to end my adventure back to school.  it was sort of anti-climactic though, since i still have a term paper to write this week.  and get this:

my term paper is on my own personal political philosophy.  i think that is such a fitting way not only to wrap up the class or the semester, but the perfect way to sum up before graduation on saturday.  it will require me to really reflect on everything i've learned this past year and decide what i really stand for, and hopefully might help me prioritize in searching for jobs out in boston.

it was also a little anti-climactic because i couldn't go celebrate with my favorite carpool/study group buddies, lp + cw, but instead had to rush home to sign the lease for our house!  yup - the isbouts home is now officially going to be occupied by someone else come january 1st.  it's bittersweet, because i really am still super nervous about having someone else live in the house - but this also means it's one less thing that i have to worry about now.

after the lease was taken care of, pi and i rushed out to get him to the airport.  another first today - he left for his first business trip for his new company.  even though he started his job officially on the 26th of november, tomorrow is really his first day.  he hasn't had to go into an office or even really meet anyone from his company yet, so tomorrow is a big day for him!  he's gone all week - won't be back til friday afternoon - but it gives me lots of time to finish up my final paper, pack, and prep for the party this weekend.  i better get used to him being out of town, so i am keeping myself super busy this time around.

i am still kind of in shock about being done with class.  i don't think it will really hit me until i finish my term paper this week - but i am hoping i can actually knock it all out tomorrow evening so i can get on with all the stuff i have to do.

goodnight all!

til next time...

17 November 2012

i think i'm going to boston.

so as soon as i got home from class i put on pandora for some background study music.  (fyi: my go-to station is 'early jazz radio.'  it's amazing.)

anywho, this is the first song that came on:

if you can't see it, that would be 'boston' by augustana (don't judge; it came up on she & him radio).  so, the song may be a little a little depressing, but it was just a good sign for me.  all the time i kind of go back and forth on this whole move to boston thing, but i have been pretty optimistic and excited lately.  and i love finding little signs from the universe that my life is headed in the right direction - especially in times of change.

12 November 2012

BIG changes coming.

so for a little while now, i've been hinting at some major news coming.  and the day is finally here where i can share it!  it's been so hard keeping this a secret for some time, but now that we have told our close family and friends i can finally share with you all our BIG secret!

the next chapter of our lives is about to start...
we are moving to boston!

ok, pick your jaws up from the coffee table.  i know.  it all just kind of happened over the past few weeks - but we are starting to get incredibly excited about our new adventure.  now you can see why things have been so quiet around the blog - i am not exactly known for my secret-keeping skills.  PI got an amazing job offer that would have been crazy to turn down.  so off we go - leaving our jobs and renting the house we have spent the last two and a half years turning into our home.  it is bittersweet - i love our home, our neighborhood and our family [mom] and friends [girlfriends!] here, but it's just time for something new.  and we have never been ones to turn down a new adventure.

we are listing the house for rent because we just couldn't bear the thought of selling it.  it makes me pretty nervous, but i am trying to keep a very positive mindset - this is just our path right now and everything is going to work out lovely.  it always does.

life is just amazing.  just like eighteen months ago i wrote about how my life was going to change because i was going to make some big changes in it by going back to school.  well, school is over in exactly 35 days, so it's time for me to start the next chapter in my life after i am done.  forcing me to quit my job, leave my home, move to a new place - all just after i graduated and the election finished up.  it's a sign of something new to come and i can't wait to see what it is.

but for now, i have to go back to the poster which changed my life -

'open your mind, arms and heart to new things and people.  some opportunities only come once - seize them'

til next time...

excited

weekend with our favorite couple

hey friends! i don't know about you, but we had an awesome weekend.  we drove up to glenwood springs to hang out with one of our favorite couples ever.

it was a nice little getaway.  it has been so unbelievably busy around here that i can't even explain - or share just yet - everything that's been going on!  but all in good time my friends.  a great way to pass the time from homework and other stresses is drinking with friends i learned.

PI & LP
you know you get along too well when you both make goofy faces at the same time
the boys strutting

hope your weekend was as awesome as mine :)

we finished the weekend off with some tacos and mojitos with momma at a local el camino.  lots of big changes to discuss.  wish i could say more now... but it will have to wait just one more week folks!

happy sunday evening and i'll be back again soon!

26 June 2012

faith in fate.

it's been a rough couple days here at our house, and i needed some soul-soothing today.  today i need to know that everything is for a bigger purpose.  to trust in my fate and destiny.

i gathered a few of my favorite inspirational pins from my pinterest board, and thought i'd share.  i did it a few months ago when i needed a dose of positivity and got some good compliments.  so this is for all you out there who also need a little pick-me-up today.

faith in the journey.
you can always start again.
this one's difficult to do sometimes.
possibly my favorite one :)
no matter what.
in... and out.
can't wait to see what's ahead.
very fitting today.
shhhhh.

all will we back to normal here soon - especially because i start my weekend classes on saturday.

til next time - please think of all those in colorado today suffering from the wildfire devastation.  if you are able to help, please go to help colorado now to donate.

16 January 2012

in case you were wondering...

hi friends.  happy 2012.

sorry for my prolonged absence!  the irony of it all is one of my goals for 2012 is to update my blog weekly.  HA!  guess that hasn't started off too well.

there won't be much in this post, just wanted to tell you i'm still alive and explain just a bit about my absence.

i'm still on break from school, however, this has been much less of a break than i'd hoped for.  so far, this is what 2012 has brought us and what i've been up to:

  • writing a script for a documentary (!!!)
  • back to school tomorrow
  • still working...
  • recruiting for OFA like a mad woman (i got promoted!)
  • still volunteering with olive branch

and yep, i think that's all.  not too much :)

i'll re-surface soon, in the next week or so, and try to get back to blogging!  but for now, i've got a deadline to meet...

xoxo

2011 blanks!

1.   new years is  totally overated, but a clean slate. a chance to do things over - or try again.

2.   one of my new year's resolutions will be  i don't do new year's resolutions. i do these things called 'balanced goals & objectives' that i'll post more on later.  but one of them is going to be to finish school with all a's & b's!

3.  a new year's resolution i've made in the past was to  work out. doesn't everyone do that? it lasted like two months.

4. the most time consuming resolution i ever made was  see above.

5.  this year i will be spending new year's eve  sipping champagne on my couch while watching the twilight zone marathon with philip. love it.

6.  if i could wish one thing for my new year it would be  to finally be done with school.

7.  2012 is going to be  there's no use in making predictions - the way i thought 2011 was going to go was the complete opposite of how it went. so i can't wait to see the surprises and start our new year adventure :)

20 July 2011

quick update during a slow month...

ok, so it's been a slow month blogging wise.  you definitely got me there.  but i'll do a quick update and tell you why :)

i'm kind of past that whole "i'm enjoying doing nothing until i start school" thing and i have decided to try and do as much as i can before i start school.  yeah, a bit of a change in philosophy. but i just happened to get involved in a few things lately that have been hard to turn down.  first of all, i'm doing lots more volunteering with olive branch - be sure to sign up for their mailing lists, as i'm going to be helping out with the newsletters! i'm volunteering every friday before i head off to work, in addition to whatever i can help out with via my laptop at home.  i'm really excited to be doing something more meaningful with my spare time and utilizing my "talents" in some way.

and then... well, it's campaign season.  don't worry, i won't get all political in the blog.  but during obama's 2008 run for president, i did some volunteering - just phone bank kind of stuff.  but we were living in brooklyn, where the whole state was going blue, and there wasn't much of a challenge.  i figured since i am going back to school for public policy anyway i should get a bit more involved in the political scene around denver.  colorado is going to be a major swing state in next year's election and i feel like i can really help make a difference around here.  last weekend i dragged two of my girlfriends door-to-door canvassing with me and had an awesome time!  i had one of the local campaign organizers call me today and we are getting together saturday to come up with more ideas for visibility in our neighborhood - so that will be yet another thing to spend my time on.  but i'm getting excited!  the political discussions are getting me geared up for school and ready for whatever debates may come my way in classes this fall.  i'll need to be prepared, after all... once i'm in class i can't end debates the way i do with philip (us telling each other to shut up or kissing to make the other one stop talking).

we've also had some series of events in the last week that have prevented anything productive from taking place - a trip to the ER, a car break in and a few emergencies at work that have made longer days a necessary reality.

and, to be honest, i'm trying to not spend too much time at home.  it's so damn hot here most of my evenings are spent in the yoga room on my mat in front of the fan.  i can't even bring myself to do too much weeding in the front yard, which desperately needs done BTW.  any takers? ;)

another big morning meeting for me - but stay tuned for more updates!  and sign up for that newsletter!

10 July 2011

i'm so lazy.

hi all.  sorry there haven't been any new pictures of the house lately, but in all honesty we haven't done a lick of work around here.  it's been kind of nice, actually.  like i said last weekend, the 4th of july holiday was really all about enjoying the house and not working on it - and we have still been in that 'enjoyment' mode.  and, if i'm being honest, i don't really know what we would work on next.  there's always yard work to do, but with the crazy colorado weather bringing us monsoon-like rainstorms every evening there hasn't been much chance of that.

but if i want to be even MORE honest... i'm enjoying not doing any work.  all i want to do lately is lay around and watch some of my favorite movies with my favorite husband.  maybe it's the stormy weather every night, maybe it's the fact that we are trying to save all the $$ we possibly can, or maybe, just maybe, it's the fact that in just over a month i start school in addition to my full-time job, and there won't be much time for anything but schoolwork anymore.  and i mean that now moreso than ever.  see, last week i went to go visit my new political science advisor.  i was excited as hell to meet her, get some good advice and get this ball rolling!  she gave me some really good news: quite a few of the required public policy classes i need to take are offered in a weekend format.  these classes only run three weekends throughout the entire semester, all day saturday and all day sunday.  not too shabby for three credits, right?  so after some debating with philip, i signed up for two, bringing my total credit tally for fall semester to 15.  and i'm kind of freaking out about it.  i mean, i want to do this right and i want to get through it as quickly as i can - but i don't know if i can do 15 credits.  when i come home from working til 6 on a friday night (so i don't even walk in the door til at east 7) and i see piles of laundry, breakfast dishes that need washing, dinner to be cooked... and i just don't know how i will deal with homework on top of it.  i'm starting to get nervous.

08 June 2011

LIVE YOUR DREAM & SHARE YOUR PASSION.

hello all!  there have been some AWESOME new developments in the scarano-isbouts household!  i could give you the short version... but instead i think i'll use my evening wisely and post the long version (multi-tasking while i watch game 4 of the stanley cup finals, of course, so excuse any typos!).  and if you don't want to hear it all well, then, don't read it :)

so quite a while ago, i decided i needed to do something different with my life.  not that i don't like my job; i actually enjoy it quite a bit.  i work with great people, i enjoy my customers and i am never bored.  but it's definitely not quite what i pictured myself doing.  the one problem with my job is that i don't get any fulfillment out of my job - i don't go home thinking that i did something good at the end of the day.  the beginning of my journey began when i was reading what is the what, which i highly recommend everyone in life read (for a link to amazon.com where you can buy the book, click on the clink under 'i pledge to read the written word).  it's a dave eggers novel - but really it's a true story told through the eyes of a sudanese boy who lived through genocide.  and after reading what valentino achak deng went through on a daily basis, it really put my own issues in perspective.  so i decided halfway through my book that i couldn't be one of those people who just did nothing.  i need to do something to help make the world a better place, however meager it may be.

after lots of research and discussions with my super-supportive husband, i came to the conclusion that my perfect career would be working for a non-profit.  sure, i'll take a pay cut, but it will be at the expense of doing something i am passionate about and making a difference.  that's the big motivator here.  but how does one go about making that change?  the answer is that it's gradual; it's a process and not one you can take lightly - at least not at this point in my life, being a home-owner and all.  so for me, right now, step one is going back to school!  starting in august i will once again be a college student.  i'm going back for public policy, a specific track of a political science degree.  it's a good one for non-profits because you learn about the ins and outs of local and large-scale legislation, which is where a lot of non-profits need advising.  and it's a huge plus that in this phase of my life i am very, very in to politics.

so to sum it all up...

my awesome girl laura sent this to me yesterday after stumbling upon it on another blog.  it sums up exactly how i want to live my life and how i would encourage everyone i know to live theirs.  life is too short to get caught up in things that don't make you happy - profit and loss statements, hitting those quarterly numbers, whatever it is that DOESN'T float your boat.  don't do it.  live your life for YOU.  and start today.  it's what i am going to do.  and it won't be easy.  i have nine credits in the fall and i'll still be working full time (which means a minimum of 40 hrs for me, usually more).  and on wednesdays, when i have my weekly 7:30am meeting and then will work all day, and go straight to a 5pm early political thought lecture until 8pm?  yeah, i'll want to give up.  but i'll look at this blog post, and i'll look at that picture above, and i will remember what is truly important in my life.

and if this has gotten you thinking at all, please visit these websites to learn a little more about the causes i am becoming absolutely enthralled with:

VAD foundation
olive branch

there will be many, many more updates folks!  but for now, that's what i've got for you.  so until next time... "open your mind, arms and heart to new things and people, we are united in our differences.  travel often; getting lost will help you find yourself.  life is short.  live your dream and share your passion."

until next time...
xoxo
