very exciting announcement!

GUYS.  big news here.

i am so thrilled to announce that my website is finally live + ready for you all!

it's been such a fun road here at an italian girl going dutch, but the reality is that, thanks to all my readers, i've outgrown this site.  it no longer has the capabilities to do what i need it to do, and for as much work as i've put into it, it just kind of looks old to me.

so after weeks of hard work and planning, a blogging HTML course + lots of research, i put together my own site.  i am so excited to share it all with you today.

there are still a few changes coming to the new website over the next couple weeks, but on the whole it is done, save for some new photos coming.

it's been a really fun ride.  i started an italian girl going dutch because PI + i had recently bought our house, and we wanted to share the renovations we were planning and our many travels with our friends and family near and far.  since then, it's grown in size and readership and my blog topics have evolved.

but from here on out, i won't be the italian girl going dutch anymore...

i'll be so alaina.

so come on over and check it out.  all your old favorite posts are there, along with many new features.

in another week or so i will change this site to automatically redirect to so alaina, so get your bookmarks + email updates situated... and enjoy!

thanks to the beautiful sarah mc cormick for the site name idea in the form of a haghtag, to the girls of blog (design) love for the fabulous e-course on HTML and branding, and to my amazing readers and supporters for helping me grow this more than i thought i ever could!

til next time... see you at the new site!

hello there from [snowy] colorado.

that's right, you heard me: snowy colorado.  because it's may first, so obviously that means it's time for a good ol-fashioned spring snow.  though we arrived early tuesday, today is our first full day here since we were nearly dead from jet lag for most of yesterday.

i wanted to tell you all sorry now and in advance for the absence from my blog.  there are some pretty big changes i am hard at work on for the blog, so do stay tuned.  i'll definitely be blogging but i am mostly hard at work at revamping... well, just about everything to be honest.  it's getting a big-time makeover.  here's a little hint at what i am working on [just a little clue!]:

but besides working hard on the new blog, here's what's been going on in colorado so far.

hanging out with my favorite puppy, brew.

hanging out with my favorite girls.

watching it snow.  what.  the.  hell.
hope it's nicer where you are than where i am today...

til next time...!

REAL life, unedited.

a great reminder for today.
guys, i read this today and i LOVED it.  it's on instagram's envy effect.  oh wait, here's yet another link to it.  because.  it.  kicks.  ass.

if you aren't going to read it, here's a little summation.  it's about the snippets of lives that we see on the internet.  and about what we edit out of our status updates, what's just out of the corner of that square crop on your photo.  it's incomplete.  they are moments that are highs, which is why we want to share them.

but what about all the other moments?  the photo may be of the great outfit you picked out today, but what about the days you don't get out of your sweatpants?  niequst [the author] also points out the happy couples that don't share their fighting, or the great meal you made but not the mess to be cleaned up.

again, these are the moments to be shared.  no one wants to see your dirty dishes.  no one wants to see you in sweatpants [i mean this mostly to myself, as a reminder].  the things you want to share with other people - and strangers in some cases - are the highlights of your life, of the things you do.

but the result?  it's that everyone lives perfect lives without those tense, awkward, heartbroken moments.  that spouses don't fight, that chicken doesn't get burnt, that you don't have bad hair days.  it's just not realistic.  and part of the point of increased networking is to be there for one another, is it not?  to share in times of joy and triumph, but also help one another when things aren't going their way.

there are days that this social-media-filter really effects me.  days when i would get a negative pregnancy test yet again, and hop online to see four more girls who went to my high school were pregnant.  days when i would feel so fat, being unable to get my skinny jeans to make me look skinny thanks to my fat bulge, but would see a girlfriend in a bikini with her perfect flat belly.  days when i would be feeling a little lazy, just lounging around with the tv, and would see a facebook friend out in front of the coliseum.  it makes you feel bad.  people have topped documenting their struggles, and the result is facebook news feeds and pinterest home pages and instagram shares filled with just successes.  and if you are down, it's easy to be knocked further down looking at what everyone else has and you don't.

i know i am guilty sometimes.  i look at it as sharing my high points, the things people will be interested in.  and fights i may have with pi, well, those are personal.  but i try to branch out, too.  i recently started sharing about our infertility issues, i blogged about the outrageous stress of going back to school while working and volunteering.  and i want to continue to blog about the challenges i face, as well as the high points i have.  i don't think i'm as bad as some [helloooo, i instagramed a pic of my busted-up knee last week], but i could make some improvements too.  i want to be real with everyone.  i want them to know the highlights as well as, sometimes, the low points.

i'm making some changes to my blog, and one of the changes i want to make is to be more forthcoming.  to share with you all a bit more of me [yes, there IS more], and to be real.  to share my struggles so i can connect with people and help participate in a community; one in which we share our high highs, but our low lows as well.

post something REAL today.  put it out there, on some social media platform you use.  step out from behind the veil of perceived perfection.  it doesn't have to be a secret, just something real - piles of laundry, or the pizza you ordered in for dinner because you didn't cook a martha-stewart-style meal.  it will be refreshing, i promise.

here's my SOMETHING REAL today:
my blood results from last week reveal that i am still pregnant, according to my hcg levels.  pretty disappointing.  should all be done by now, but it isn't.   so i have to go get by blood taken yet again at the end of the week.  and let me be a little bit more real by telling you that i don't do well with needles in my veins.  i've puked half of the times my blood has been taken since this pregnancy disaster began.  so i don't know where this leaves us or what will happen after i get my blood results at the end of the week, but it's disappointing.  and i wasn't going to share it because... i don't really know.  i just wasn't.

coming out of the [infertility] closet.

pic found on pinterest via look linger love
well, things around the blog are shifting.

i started this blog to share the stories of PI & i.  renovating the house, our travels, things like that.  there were always pictures and stories to share with so many people we love, many of whom are so far away.  and i don't really want to change that, but i do want to introduce a new topic into the mix: our fertility problems.

it's not something we've made public at all.  it's not even something that all of our friends, or all of our family [until recently] knew of.  we didn't tell people we were trying to get pregnant.  we didn't tell many people at all that it took us 18 months to get pregnant, and there was a very big portion of our friends and family who didn't know we lost that first baby.  and there are still yet some members of our family who aren't aware of that we lost our second baby just over a week ago.

it's not that we are secretive people.  we just didn't want to announce to people, 'hey! we're having sex without birth control!' to tell them we were trying.  we figured we'd just wait, and then surprise our family with a happy announcement.  but like many people, we just assumed it would all work out.  it hasn't so far.  i've decided i want to start sharing our experiences on the blog.  it's really personal, and not something i would normally blog about, but i have to say that while going through both of my miscarriages, reading other people's blogs and hearing about their experiences - even if they are total strangers - have been a huge source of comfort to me.  so i'm going to start sharing what we are going through.  i can't promise that everything will be on here - some things are still very personal to us.  but if my experiences can hep bring comfort to one person who has gone through something similar, well, then i'll feel pretty damn good.

so, in a nutshell, here is our fertility story.

***

it all started during christmas season of 2010.  PI was converting my parents' old home videos of my brother and i onto dvd for my parents and family members.  it was such an awesome time... we spent so many evenings going through those old home movies, looking at my brother and i as babies, of our cousins and family members.  well, the young versions of my brother and i had quite the influence on us, and by the time the home video was on dvd we had decided we would start trying for a baby of our own.  we considered it a good omen that my next cycle would begin on new year's day of 2011, and we happily embarked on our adventure.

we didn't want to use ovulation kits, basal body thermometers or anything else.  we thought we'd just pull the goalie and see if we could score.  a year passed, and it was a busy year - i decided to go back to school, started volunteering for the obama campaign, and did tons of house improvements.  so it wasn't too big of a deal that by the end of the year, there was no baby.  my doctor said we shouldn't worry yet, and said that if there was no baby by june she would recommend some testing, just to be sure.  that would mark eighteen months of 'trying.'

so it was with absolute joy that, by the end of my maycation last year, i was pregnant.  we went to my doctor's office, got confirmation of the pregnancy through bloodwork, then went home to wait until it was time for ultrasounds and other fun things.  but, as quickly as the news came, it was gone.  in no time it all i had started spotting and cramping, and just a few days after we had the good news i knew in my heart i was having a miscarriage.  it was over in just a few days, and luckily everything passed naturally and i didn't need any medication or a d&c.  but we did, however, learn that i am rh negative, and quickly learned about rhogam and how necessary it is for rh negative mothers-to-be, and i got my first rhogam treatment at the hospital.

it was a really difficult time for us [and when i wrote this depressing blog post].  we were told over and over how common miscarriage is, that it was a positive sign that i could at least get pregnant, and that most mothers who miscarry go on to have healthy, full-term babies for their next pregnancy.  so we got back to trying as soon as we could, and we felt positive.  i would have been due at the end of february, which meant i would have been seven months pregnant while finishing school - which would have been rough for me [and, let's be honest, probably just as rough for PI].  the timing just wasn't right for us.  we felt that even moreso when we made the decision to move to boston, knowing that it would have been so hard to go through all of that with a very pregnant alaina and to have a baby out here without any doctors i knew.

but we also knew that the timing was perfect for us now that we were out from boston.  with me freelancing from home, PI working from home between travels and no more school, it was the perfect time for us to get pregnant.  PI's philosophy was always that there was nothing wrong, but that we were under too much stress at home and once that stress dissipated we would conceive in no time.

and he was kind of right.  within a month of moving into our new place, i was pregnant again.  i knew it as soon as we got back from our la trip in february, but we didn't find out for sure until we were alone for our weekend getaway in montreal a week later.  the joy we both felt was absolutely amazing - even when PI had to stop five or six times so i could go to the bathroom on the drive home from montreal :]

as soon as we got back to boston, we started calling doctors [i hadn't yet found a new once since the move] to get in asap.  we explained that we were very eager to get in to confirm the pregnancy and hopefully have an ultrasound, and we found an office that would take us in quickly.  our ultrasound was fine, blood work was fine, and we were sent home with happy hearts to wait.  we were told that i wasn't as far along as i had thought, but everything still looked normal.  there was no detectable heartbeat yet, which was to be expected, and we were told to come back in two weeks.  my hcg levels were doubling and i had no troublesome symptoms, unlike my last pregnancy.  we told my mom [who had to move up her wedding, since her november date was two days away from my due date!], my dad figured it out, and we were counting the days until we could tell my family in new york and PI's family in vegas in just a few weeks.

two weeks later, we returned for our ultrasound feeling nervous but very positive.  my breasts hurt, my food habits had made a complete 180, i had morning sickness [at night for some reason], all the good, normal symptoms.  so we were pretty caught off guard when our little baby still had no heartbeat.  the doctor told us to come back again in five days, saying that it could be just 'one day too soon' to hear a heartbeat, but that it didn't look good.  we were told it was most likely not a viable pregnancy, but wouldn't be given that diagnosis until a follow-up ultrasound and blood work was taken.

we went home and mourned.  although we didn't have our diagnosis yet, we knew what was coming.  no bleeding or cramping or anything scary happened in the five days we waited, but all the same i knew in my heart once more that this was not our baby.  and sure enough, five days later we were told just that.  the only choice left was to decide if we wanted to wait for the miscarriage to happen naturally [which it inevitably would, though who knows in how long], take medication to induce the miscarriage, or have a d&c.  it was an agonizing decision and the experience was without a doubt the worst in my life, but once more, just as the news of the baby came, it was gone.

***

so.  that's where we are today.  we've had lots of blood taken for chromosomal analysis to see if we can learn why two otherwise perfectly healthy and young hopeful parents have had two heartbreaking losses.  i don't know what the next step is, but we will continue to heal while we figure out what is next.  and i will update you all from time to time, and i hope that, in doing this, i can bring some measure of comfort and help to people who may have gone through or are going through the same thing.  because i now know that you are not alone, and what you are feeling is perfectly valid.  fertility challenges make for a rough road, but though there are many different roads to parenthood, they all lead to the same place eventually.

lovepost!

hi all, and happy friday!  i am so happy to be writing this from sunny california instead of snow-covered boston for once.  a little sunshine and warm air is doing me a lot of good so far, and i am pretty stoked to spend the rest of the weekend with our family and friends out here.

but i am also happy for another reason today - today i get to share that i am doing some blogging with LOVEPOST!

LOVEPOST is the online destination for love [as well as one of my favorite websites].  readers can share their own love stories and proposal tales.  but more than just love stories, they have great tips on wedding planning, dating, and now, tales from newlyweds.  i have been sharing some tales from our bathroom renovation, sharing our story as well as what we learned along the way.  i'll be sharing weekly updates of adventures from our house, as well as updates from our married life in boston.

i hope you'll hop on over to LOVEPOST, explore their site, and check out my first tale of the bathroom.

happy weekend to you, friends!

10 best things about my life right now.

i've had a request for more '10 best' lists.  i've kind of stayed away from those posts for a while.
but, since it was requested, i came up with a new one...

*not necessarily in order

homemade tartifilette by yours truly.
1.  i never thought i would actually say this, but the first one that comes to mind is cooking.  i've taken to going to the market every week, with at least 4-5 plans for dinners i will make.  shopping is easy, stress free, and much cheaper than it used to be.  i have plenty of time for meal planning, market hunting and experimenting in the kitchen each night, and i love it.  there is a great feeling that comes with making something new when it turns out wonderful and your husband just can't get enough.  i'm also now treating us to what i call 'the sweet of the week,' which is one baked good i try out for desserts and snacks.  it's getting me less afraid of baking, and so far so yummy.

me, while blogging, today!
2.  i'm sure you've noticed this, but another one is blogging constantly.  i'm able to post something new just about every day - whether it's a new tip, idea, some thoughts i have, photos to share, or just my own ramblings... it's nice that this blog doesn't fall to the wayside anymore as an afterthought.

me + aj hanging out on the T
3.  now that i am out east, i get much more time with my brother and dad [and his wife of course].  i haven't lived in the same state as my dad since i was in high school, and i haven't lived in the same state as my brother since before college [i don't count living in dorms - that's like a whole other world].  as much as i miss my mom, it's magnificent to be able to have sunday dinners with my dad, or call my brother up for happy hour just because.  i love it.

my mani 2 weeks ago.
4.  little things such as taking care of myself kind of took a backseat while i was working, schooling and volunteering.  now, i can give myself a mani if i want.  i am cooking a lot but also eating better, because i have time and don't have to grab a handful of potato chips for dinner as i run to a phone bank.  i have time for yoga and for running - which i love.

tea + book = happiness.
5.  stress free living.  need i say more?

mustaches with mom.
6.  i am spending so much more time enjoying the little things and simple pleasures of my life.  becoming engrossed a great book.  a hot cup of tea.  my new obsession with the west wing.  emails from friends back home telling me how they are doing.  texts from my travel buddy in budapest.  i relish each little thing i do every day [except laundry].

boston.
7.  even though it is freeeezing out, i am loving exploring the city, our new city.  new restaurants to discover, hidden bars to learn of, learning new highways and shortcuts.  i love it.  it will be even better in a few months when we can venture outside without eight layers of clothing on and a backup plan to get home in case it's too cold to walk.

lofty living space!
8.  as much as i miss our denver cottage, our home, i totally love loft living.  it's always fun to decorate a new space and make it your own, but i especially love that our new space is totally different from our old.  it just makes it different and gives us a new experience.  i love our new apartment.

nyc visits more to see this guy! <3
9.  being out on the east coast means traveling ease.  nyc is just three and a half hours south of us, so it's easy to hit the mass pike when i want to see my family down there.  we are driving up to montreal next weekend - something i've never done before - for my birthday trip, which is going to be phenomenal.  another trip for dc is slotted for april, and now that pi is traveling for work, for the cost of just one airline ticket i can go meet him wherever he is and we can have a weekend together - hence my jetting off to los angeles this weekend!  we are so lucky.

my writing setup each day.
10.  of course, possibly the best of all, is writing again.  i feel so happy, so at peace with myself, to be able to be writing again and working on my book once more.  i feel like things have come full circle for me - when i was in such a dark, depressed place in my life all i wanted to do was write.  but i couldn't, having work and school and other involvements.  and gradually i lost interest in school and just couldn't continue anymore, not having the strength to do so.  and now, here i am years later, the happiest i have ever been, and finally able to concentrate on my work.  it's amazing how life works.

one quick note... none of this is to sound gloat-y or anything.  there are many different ways one could look at my life right now - 28 and just graduated college, unemployed, living alone often while my husband is gone... but i don't have that outlook.  i am in love with my life right now and the opportunities it affords me.  i will not always have this luxury of time, so i am enjoying every moment of it and taking advantage to write my book.

24 October 2012

well hello there.

hi there.

yes, i'm still here.  i haven't gone missing, i haven't abandoned my lovely little blog.  the truth is, october has been insane.  before my first weekend class finished, we got the syllabus for our 2nd weekend class of the semester.  and let me tell you folks, it is b-r-u-t-a-l.  it looks like it could be my most demanding class so far, so i'm going out with a bang.  but just as i was stressing over the syllabus, i had a comforting thought:

it was the last syllabus i was going to read.

so it seemed a little bit more manageable after that.  it may be the most difficult class yet - but it is my VERY. LAST. ONE.

but besides school, there have definitely been other things keeping me very busy, and i am very happy to say that soon there will be some big changes to announce, i have a feeling!  one of which is a new blog i will be writing for - can't wait to share the details!  but it isn't time quite yet, so stay tuned.

oh, and just to update the countdown...

54 more days
until my last assignment for my last class is due.  so it could actually be less than that.

that, and i will be back to blogging regularly very soon.

and if not, see you in 54 days.

kidding :)

14 August 2012

kind of how i'm feeling.

just thought i'd share this, because this face right there is how i've been feeling the last two weeks.

i obviously haven't been blogging while i finish up school.  last paper of the summer semester is due saturday - just in time for fall semester to start monday.  yeah.  and there's been a hiccup with my fall classes, so i'm tryng to figure all of that out before relaxing to blog.  sooo ready for this all to be over with.

but we did find the time to make a surprise trip to boston last weekend - pics coming soon (maybe even tomorrow!)!  it was an awesome time.

hopefully my smile will be back soon, along with new house projects!  we've started a new one on the front yard - and it looks pretty good so far.

til next time...!  happy tuesday!
